Risky Networking

The Ujamaa Business Expo held at African and Caribbean Cultural Centre, Turnpike Lane on  Saturday 28 April 2012 was a success for me. (Although, I can’t speak for the organisers or the vendors)As a seasoned networker, I quickly set about my task of meeting new contacts and rekindling old ones.  I talked to people, like the day was my last and guess what, I actually loved it!

One would never imagine that, as a girl growing up, I was painfully shy; so painfully shy that to walk in a crowded room made me sweat from head to toe. And I mean sweating profusely. (Forget about glowing. I think glowing was never part of my vocabulary!).

Networking for those that don’t know or don’t want to connect is a risk. Either we don’t face embarrassing questions and answers or awkwardness or we pursue  an opportunity. However, I will say  that from my experience, connecting with new people, exchanging ideas, exploring opportunities far outweighs rejection.

Networking is a skill that is enhanced over time. It not only expands your circle, but it expands your mind. All that is required,  is that you take a risk; mingle, chat, smile, laugh, do what ever it takes to make that connection!

The Business Show

Hope you’ve registered for your free tickets to Business Startup and The Great British Business Show.

The two events are taking place at London’s ExCeL on the 17th and 18th of May, and are being run together as part of The Business Show. Combined they offer 2 days of invaluable advice and information for anyone that is either starting a new business, or looking to expand an existing business.

As well as over 300 exhibitors, visitors can also attend one of the 200 free seminars from successful business people like David Gold, Simon Duffy, Saira Khan, Penny Power and Brad Burton – to name just a few of the experts that are lined up.

Over the last 26 shows, the organisers have been working hard to ensure the event caters to a business of any size, and over the two days a number of industry specific workshops will be held focussing on key business areas like business planning, marketing and social media. As usual, there are  a number of networking events, and countless opportunities to meet and do business with your fellow entrepreneurs.

Presenting Workshop

No two presenters are the same however the technique to deliver an effective presentation is. The next Presenting Workshop is scheduled for Friday 20th February 2012, in London.

Rosemary Laryea’s  presenting skills started more than 14 years ago when she was in the IT industry as a consultant. Now having made the transition to the media industry, the listeners voted her  best female presenter on the radio station (and best interview for her Spike Lee interview). She  wants to demonstrate that the skills she used in her consultancy days are transferrable – hence developing ‘The Presenting Workshop’. Whether you want to learn the art of presenting for radio, tv, meeting room, boardroom or hosting an event, the technique is the same.

The Presenting Workshop is in two parts.

Part 1 : 09:30am – 3:30pm. She will take you through the tools of the trade. This is a very interactive group session were you are given opportunities to practise what is been taught. If there is a presentation project you are currently working on she will encourage you to bring it along with you. At the end of part 1 you will be equipped with the tools to confidently deliver a presentation from a position of authority.

Part 2 :- 10am till 1pm. On a day that suits you. One to one. This part of the workshop involves you experiencing a live broadcast on my show. Rosemary produces and presents an arts, culture and lifestyle show where she conducts both studio and phone interviews. What better way to see how to think quick on your feet – which is required in all presentations!

Numbers are limited inorder for candidates to get the most of her time. Price from £100, depending on status. For more information and to book, simply email or phone her.

Haringey Friends of Parks

Haringey Friends of Parks Forum

PARKS PETITION CONTINUES! – NO TO 50% CUTS IN OUR PARKS BUDGET….

The last Haringey Friends of Parks Forum meeting agreed to continue our petition, up to a deadline of 4th September (end of the school holidays), online and on paper. We have nearly 2,000 signatures, and a final push is needed in the coming week! When we reach 2,200 signatures a debate will be scheduled at a full Council meeting – with enough pressure our proposal for adequate funding for parks could see the previous decision reversed or additional funding found. Sign online: www.haringey.gov.uk/epetitions Or download petition sheets at: www.haringeyfriendsofparks.org.uk

” Our green spaces are a fantastic resource for all sections of our communities. They provide a unique range of opportunities for recreation, relaxation, community activities and wildlife, which is why Friends groups are calling for proper maintenance and staffing rather than the current cuts.”
- Joan Curtis, Secretary, Haringey Friends of Parks Forum

Next meeting of the Forum
Saturday 3rd September, 10am
@ Bruce Castle Museum, N17
Open to all Friends groups and other community groups engaged in improving their local open space:

Keep on the Tight Rope of Life

Life is a  tight rope.

Even though I  trudge along carefully, sometimes wobble and  even lose my balance a little, but I still remain on track.

Once though, I remember I was on a high tight rope. The thought of going back entered my mind. I almost did, but something kept me looking forward. In any case, I had come so far and really couldn’t see myself turning around.

At another time, I decided I should try another direction. Another rope to my side. A fresh new angle. Mmm felt good, but then I reached a huge obstacle. With a little time and effort, I managed to bypass it and simply carried on.

And my point?

Life is a tight rope. We are faced with many paths and sure we may falter now and again and even come across obstacles, but as long as we keep on track, who can stop us, but ourselves.
